Wakapoa and Mainstay have been crowned champions of the Essequibo leg of the Republic Bank/One Guyana ‘B’ Division Volleyball tournament.
The day’s proceedings concluded with thrilling matches and outstanding performances from participating male and female teams across the region.
The competition, held among several villages, saw Wakapoa females and Mainstay males emerge victorious in their respective divisions.
Teams competing in this leg included:
- Kabakaburi Sports Club Seniors
- Kabakaburi Secondary (Male and Female)
- Wakapoa Volleyball Team (Male and Female)
- Capoey (Male and Female)
- Mainstay (Male)
In the female division, Wapakoa defeated Kabakaburi in straight sets (25-18, 25-13), while Capoey dominated Kabakaburi 25-9, 25-9. In the final, Wakapoa defeated Capoey.
In the opening round of the male competition, Wakapoa Seniors defeated Kabakaburi Seniors 25-14, 25-20; Capoey defeated Kabakaburi Secondary 25-8, 25-13; and Mainstay topped Kabakaburi Secondary 25-12, 25-14.
Semi-final action saw Mainstay defeating Kabakaburi Seniors 25-12, 25-20, and Wakapoa getting the better of Capoey 25-20, 25-11.
The final produced an intense showdown with Mainstay edging out Wakapoa in three-sets (25-20, 23-25, 15-8).
The final leg of the tournament will take place on November 1-2 from 09:00h on each day at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
The national finals will feature top teams from Regions One, Two, Three, Four, Five, Six, Seven, Nine, and 10 competing for championship glory.
A press release from the organisers noted: “This tournament continues to foster unity, sportsmanship and talent development under the One Guyana initiative, bringing communities together through volleyball. This tournament is being sponsored by the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport and Republic Bank Guyana.”
