Hand-in-Hand Celebrates 160 Years of Trust, Integrity, and Service

The Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire Insurance Company Limited proudly celebrates 160 years of excellence, marking one of the most significant milestones in Guyana’s corporate history. Established in 1865, the company has stood as a pillar of trust, resilience, and innovation, providing generations of Guyanese with reliable, affordable protection and peace of mind.

From its inception and in the aftermath of the great fires that once devastated Georgetown, Hand-in-Hand emerged with a mission to safeguard lives, homes, and businesses. Over a century and a half later, that mission endures, stronger than ever, guided by a steadfast commitment to integrity and service.

Through the years, Hand-in-Hand has achieved a legacy of remarkable accomplishments:

  • Pioneering Guyana’s insurance industry as one of the nation’s first fire insurers, setting the foundation for modern insurance practice.
  • As the founding member of the Hand-in-Hand Group, which comprises:
    • The Hand-in-Hand Mutual Fire Insurance Company Limited (established 1865)
    • Hand-in-Hand Mutual Life Assurance Company Limited (a Life company, incorporated: 1966)
    • GCIS – a proprietary composite (Property/ Life) insurance company (acquired 1998)
    • Hand-in-Hand Trust Corporation – the largest trust company in Guyana (acquired 2002).
    • Hand-in-Hand Investments – a special subsidiary set up to handle the Group’s real estate and special investments portfolio.
    • Frandec & (Insurance) Inc. – a health insurance provider (acquired January 2023)
  • Expanding its reach and services with a vast branch network of nineteen offices
  • Maintaining 100% Guyanese ownership, ensuring that decision-making and growth remain rooted in local expertise and national development.
  • Earning an international A.M. Best Financial Strength Rating of “B++ (Good)” as the first indigenous insurer; a recognition that reflects the company’s strong balance sheet, prudent management, and consistent operating
  • Embracing modernization through the adoption of digital services, streamlined claims processing, and a more customer-focused approach that meets the needs of a new generation.
  • Fulfilling its corporate social responsibility through longstanding support for education, health, youth empowerment, disaster relief, and social development programmes across Guyana.

Reaching 160 years is an achievement few institutions attain. It is a testament not only to Hand-in-Hand’s financial stability but also to the enduring trust of its policyholders and the steadfast dedication of its employees and agents, past and present.

“As we commemorate 160 years of service, we are profoundly grateful to our clients and partners who have placed their confidence in us,” the company said in a statement. “Our A.M. Best rating affirms what Guyanese have long known,  that  Hand-in-Hand  remains  a  company  built  on  strength,  reliability,  and  care.”

As it looks to the future, Hand-in-Hand continues to invest in innovation, customer experience, and sustainable growth, ensuring that its founding promise, to protect and empower Guyanese families and businesses, endures for generations to come (Press release)
