Top Gyms ready for battle in Terrence Poole National Intermediate Championship

Guyana’s leading amateur gyms are set to battle for national glory as the Terrence Poole National Intermediate Championship, which will be held over three nights starting October 24 at the National Gymnasium in Georgetown, takes place.

The tournament, hosted by the Guyana Boxing Association (GBA), is a crucial proving ground for boxers transitioning from the novice to the elite levels.

This year, the championship doubles as a tribute to the late IBA Three-Star Coach Terrence Poole, whose commitment to discipline and excellence shaped the careers of numerous national athletes.

All eyes will be on the reigning champions, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Gym, Coach Poole’s former training base.

The GDF boxers have built a powerful amateur setup, holding national titles across the novice, intermediate, and open divisions, and are determined to assert their dominance once more.

However, several hungry challengers are ready to upset the established order:

  • Berbice is bringing a rising crop of young fighters.
  • The Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym is deploying its battle-hardened warriors.
  • The Guyana Police Force (GPF) team is seen as an emerging force, eager to prove its place among the country’s best.

The GBA has encouraged fans to attend and support an event that celebrates intense competition and the enduring legacy of a true boxing pioneer.
