Teen dead, one critical following Belfield crash

A fatal crash at Belfield Public Road, East Coast Demerara (E.C.D.) claimed the life of 17-year-old Laron Harris of Dochfour on Saturday.

Police said the accident occurred around 14:15 hrs and involved motor lorry #GRR 6089, owned by a private construction company and driven by a 33-year-old Alberttown resident, and motorcycle #CG 5938, ridden by Harris and his pillion rider, Josiah Abrams, whose full particulars are yet to be confirmed.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the motorcycle, reportedly speeding eastward along the northern driving lane, swerved to avoid two goats on the roadway when it collided head-on with the westbound lorry.

Both Harris and Abrams sustained severe injuries and were taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where Harris was pronounced dead. Abrams was later transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital in critical condition.

The lorry driver tested negative for alcohol. Both vehicles have been lodged at the Cove and John Police Station as investigations continue. Harris’ body is at the Memorial Gardens Funeral Home awaiting a post-mortem examination.
