A bus driver was remanded in prison on Tuesday after being charged with possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.
Eulet Mars, 44, of Lot 117, Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice, appeared at the Blairmont Magistrates’ Court before Magistrate Michelle Matthias.
The court heard that on November 2, 2025, on Foulis Public Road, West Coast Berbice, he was found in possession of a large quantity of cannabis intended for trafficking.
In the presence of his family, Mars pleaded not guilty to the charge.
His lawyer, Dexter Smart, informed the court that Mars has no previous offenses and is the sole breadwinner for his family.
Smart stated that on the day in question, Mars had been hired as a bus driver. He added that his client is willing to surrender his passport and comply with any conditions for bail.
While requesting reasonable bail for Mars, the lawyer argued that many public transportation operators become victims of crimes related to the transportation of illegal substances.
In opposition to bail, Police Prosecutor Sergeant Garfield Edwards stated that Mars was the only occupant of the minibus. He insisted that if someone is hired to transport goods, they should be aware of what they are carrying. Edwards urged the magistrate not to rely on the lawyer’s statements.
Edwards requested that bail be denied, citing that the case file is incomplete.
After considering the arguments from both the lawyer and the prosecutor, Magistrate Matthias remarked that this is a serious offense and that the quantity of cannabis involved is substantial.
She noted that the prosecutor was correct in asserting that the defendant should ensure he checks what he is transporting, especially given the severe penalties associated with such offenses if found guilty.
Magistrate Matthias denied bail and remanded Mars to prison.
The case has been transferred to the Weldaad Magistrates’ Court, with a hearing scheduled for November 28.
