Gold is Money and Sparta Boss advance in ‘Champions of Champions’ Futsal

Defending champions Gold is Money and Futsal giants Sparta Boss safely navigated their way into the Round of 16 as the 2nd edition of the Bent Street/VP ‘Champion of Champions’ Futsal Cup continued with a packed night of action at the National Gymnasium.

A total of seven matches were played on Friday, with the favourites largely living up to their billing, although not without a scare for the holders.

Gold is Money, the reigning champions, had to battle hard to progress, eventually squeaking past a determined Plaisance side with a tight 2-1 victory in the fifth match of the evening.

In contrast, traditional powerhouse Sparta Boss made lighter work of their opponents, comfortably dispatching Harmony Ballers 5-1 in the penultimate fixture, sending a clear warning to the rest of the competition.

The performance of the night arguably belonged to the emerging side, Team Spirit. The newcomers underlined their potential as a serious title contender by battering Victoria 6-1 in the final match of the night. Their dominant display sets up a mouth-watering clash in the next round.

North East La Penitence also ensured their progression with a comfortable 4-0 shutout victory over Pike Street.

In the night’s other results:

  • Stabroek Ballers secured a solid 3-1 win against Eastside.
  • Corinthians overcame a tough challenge from Albouystown, eventually prevailing 2-1.
  • Bent St B edged a closely fought contest against Marad Ballers with another 2-1 scoreline.

The winning team in the main men’s tournament will walk away with a substantial prize of $1,000,000 and the championship trophy.

The runners-up will receive $500,000, while the third and fourth-place finishers will pocket $300,000 and $200,000, respectively.

The event will also feature Women’s and Youth segments, which commence at the semi-final stage. The winners will be awarded $150,000 (Women) and $100,000 (Youth).

The tournament will resume on Tuesday, 18th November at the National Gymnasium.
