Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh says the Safe Road Intelligence System has become a decisive tool in tightening traffic enforcement nationwide, with more than 15,000 speeding tickets issued through the system alone since it became operational in April 2025.
Speaking at the launch of the Guyana Police Force’s Christmas Policing Plan, Singh said the integration of smart cameras and road-monitoring technology has transformed “safe city into safe country,” giving police real-time insight into road violations and allowing immediate deployment or redeployment of ranks.
There are currently 26 operational camera sites feeding into the Safe Road Intelligence System.
The automated system, officially launched on April 7, 2025 was developed primarily to monitor speeding. However, it also detects a range of other offences, including tinted windows, coloured lights, and failure to wear seat belts.
Singh noted that the system generates about 200 cases every week, particularly for parking and obstruction offences. He warned that motorists who ignore ticket payments will face court action.
“If you don’t pay, we will proceed to court to ensure that you pay,” he said, adding that officers will not be exercising discretion during the busy holiday period.
“Comply with the use of the road…there will be no discretion to be exercised,” Singh said.
Speeding remains the most prevalent offence. Of 32,768 speeding tickets issued this year, nearly half- 15,000 originated from the Safe Road Intelligence System.
Singh said some drivers were caught travelling at speeds of up to 180 km/h.
Overall, 37,601 traffic tickets have been issued countrywide for 2025 so far.
Singh also highlighted the effectiveness of speed radar signs and ongoing efforts to remove reckless drivers from the road. Twenty-one driver’s licences have been suspended this year, mostly from drivers involved in fatal accidents.
Additionally, motorists stopping on the Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge will face a $100,000 fine, and seven drivers have already been penalised under this measure.
With the Christmas policing period in full effect, the Traffic Chief urged motorists to obey the traffic laws.
