Badminton and Chess Federation laud historic National Sports Gala

The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) and the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF) have united to praise the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport and the National Sports Commission (NSC) for fulfilling their promise to host a landmark national sports awards gala, highlighting what they call an “unprecedented era of collaboration.”

In a press release, both federations acknowledged the significance of the event in recognising the achievements of athletes, coaches, and administrators across the country.

The GCF expressed its pleasure at seeing Minister Charles Ramson Jr. follow through on his commitment to deliver the gala award ceremony for the nation’s sporting personnel.

Beyond the recognition ceremony, the associations emphasized the tangible support and investment being channelled into grassroots sports development.

The GBA expressed its deep appreciation for the Government’s sustained commitment, noting that the investment has had a “positive and measurable impact” on the development of badminton. This includes enhanced facilities, expanded training opportunities, and crucial assistance for athletes participating in regional and international competitions.

“Their commitment and discipline reflect the true spirit of excellence,” the GBA stated, adding that this support is strengthening athletes’ performance and elevating the sport.

Similarly, the GCF acknowledged the significant support and engagement it has received, which is actively “charting the path for the development of our sport.”

The Federation specifically commended the NSC’s approach of working directly with the GCF to target specific needs, a method they believe will “fast-track the implementation of many of the programmes” in the future.

Both bodies affirmed their commitment to continuing this partnership to achieve ambitious long-term goals.

The GCF is working in an environment of “unprecedented collaboration” towards broad sports development, while the GBA has clearly set its sights higher.

The Badminton Association’s long-term aims include wider youth participation, improved coaching capacity, and the aspirational goal of qualifying a Guyanese badminton player for the Olympic Games.
