A man from Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, has been sentenced to four years in prison for trafficking over $9.1 million worth of narcotics.
Kevin Walton, a 26-year-old resident of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice, appeared before Magistrate Allan Wilson at the Mahaicony Magistrates’ Court on Friday.
During the proceedings, it was revealed that on 25 November 2025, at Harmony Hall, Mahaicony Village, East Coast Demerara, Walton was found in possession of 30,625 grammes of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
Walton, who was unrepresented, admitted guilt to the charge.
Once he entered his plea, the prosecution presented the facts of the case.
On the day in question, acting on a tip-off, two police officers went to Harmony Hall in a police vehicle. Upon arrival, they noticed motor car PRR 5752 parked on the public road facing west.
One of the officers approached the vehicle and observed two occupants: a man in the driver’s seat who identified himself as Kevin Waldron, and a woman who also gave her identity.
When asked why they were at the location, both said they were “just hanging out”.
The officer then requested to search the car but found nothing illegal.
According to the prosecution, the officer proceeded to check the trunk while Waldron and the woman looked on. There, he discovered three black garbage bags containing seven clear, compressed parcels suspected to be cannabis.
Both individuals were informed of the offence and cautioned. Waldron accepted responsibility for the drugs, stating that the woman had no knowledge of them.
Waldron and the woman, along with the suspected narcotics, were taken to the Mahaicony Police Station, where the cannabis was weighed in their presence and valued at $9.1 million. Waldron was subsequently charged.
After reviewing the facts, Magistrate Wilson asked Waldron if he had anything to say, to which he responded in the negative.
The Magistrate then imposed a fine of $500,000 and sentenced Waldron to four years in prison.
Upon hearing the sentence, several of Waldron’s relatives broke down in tears.
As he was being escorted from the courtroom, Magistrate Wilson advised him to use his time in prison to reflect on his life choices and future goals.
“You are only 26 years old; you destroyed your future. You threw away your whole future,” he told him.
The Magistrate further reminded Waldron that drug trafficking carries serious consequences, including imprisonment and heavy fines.
