Winning start for Berbice against Hinterland team in Female Inter-County; LBI game rained out

History was created on Friday (November 28, 2025) when a hinterland team competed for the first time in the Guyana Cricket Board’s Senior Women’s Inter-County limited-over competition.

Hinterland All-Stars faced off against defending 50-over champions Berbice, but endured an eight-wicket defeat in a rain-affected match at the Lusignan Ground.

Over at LBI, the other game between Demerara and Essequibo was abandoned without a ball bowled due to overnight and early morning showers. This game, the Guyana Cricket Board announced, will be replayed on Saturday from 09:00h at the same venue.

At the Amerindian Heritage Games in September, President Irfaan Ali charged the Guyana Cricket Board with including indigenous teams in the national cricket structure, affording male and cricketers the same opportunity as those on the coastland.

The Guyana Cricket Board said it fully embraces this mandate: “Their introduction represents an important step forward in expanding opportunities for emerging female cricketers and strengthening regional competition.”

Led by Kelsey Couchman, Hinterland All-Stars were inserted to bat first against Berbice and they immediately found the going tough in a match reduced to 20 overs per side after rain forced a late start.

By the third over half the side was dismissed with just five runs on the board with experienced off-spinner Plaffiana Millington picking up a hat-trick.

Opener Malina Peters struck a six, the only boundary of the innings, in topscoring with 16 off 22. Extras were 12 as seven batters fell without scoring in a total of 34 in 9.3 overs.

Player-of-the-Match Millington took 3-5 off two overs, with Daniella Manns (2-1) and skipper Sheneta Grimmond (2-4) offering support.

Tifeny La Rose then took 2-10, but Berbice romped to victory at 35-2 in 5.3 overs with opener Jada Fraser making 13.
