Guyana will take centre stage in regional health discussions next year as the host of the 2026 Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA) Annual Health Research Conference. The event, scheduled for April 22–26, will spotlight the latest innovations in health, with Guyana sharing its progress in medical research and public health initiatives.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Ministry of Health’s Brickdam Office, Health Minister Dr. Frank Anthony expressed excitement about the opportunity to highlight Guyana’s work and learn from neighbouring countries.
“We have a number of things we are eager to share, and I’m sure the visiting nations have many achievements of their own,” Dr. Anthony said.
“This conference will be an excellent platform for exchanging ideas and advancing health solutions across the Caribbean.”
Guyana has made notable strides in combating infectious diseases and aims to eliminate at least five neglected infections by 2030, the Minister added, underscoring the country’s commitment to improving health outcomes for its citizens.
Dr. Lisa Indar, CARPHA’s Executive Director, praised Guyana’s leadership in health innovation, calling the upcoming conference a “legacy event” for the nation. “Guyana has demonstrated exemplary leadership in innovations in health, making it the perfect host for a conference focused on progress and solutions,” she said.
The 2026 gathering will mark the 70th anniversary of CARPHA’s Annual Health Research Conference, first held in 1956 at a time when the Caribbean urgently needed collaboration to strengthen healthcare. Over the decades, the conference has helped advance strategies for infectious disease control, chronic illness management, and overall healthcare improvement in the region.
“Breakthroughs in vaccines, diagnostics, and treatment have transformed lives,” Dr. Indar said.
“Rapid tests for malaria, HIV, TB, and COVID-19 allow for early detection and treatment, saving lives and preventing further transmission.”
As Guyana prepares to welcome health experts from across the Caribbean, the conference promises to be a showcase of innovation, collaboration, and the tangible impact of science on people’s lives.
