The stage is set for year-end football as the draws for the Guyana Football Federation’s Super 16 Cup were completed, confirming a unique seeded structure that promises high-stakes action at the National Training Centre (NTC) in Providence.
The tournament kicks off this Saturday, December 6, with all matches scheduled to be held at the NTC.
The action is set to conclude on the iconic date of January 1st with the grand final.
According to a press release, the Super 16 Cup, which brings together the nation’s top Elite League clubs and leading Regional Member Association (RMA) teams, will use a split, round-robin group phase to determine which eight lower-seeded teams advance to the quarter-finals.
The top four finishers from the recently concluded Elite League Season 7 have been automatically seeded through to the Quarter-Final stage, bypassing the initial group rounds.
These Elite League heavyweights were placed into four different groups to anchor the draw:
Group A: Slingerz Football Club (Elite League Champions), Group B: Western Tigers FC, Group C: Guyana Police Force FC and Group D: Guyana Defence Force FC
The remaining 12 clubs—comprising the 5th to 9th place finishers from the Elite League and seven teams from the RMAs—were drawn into three-team groups to battle for the right to face the seeded clubs.
Group Phase Teams (5th to 9th Place Elite League), Monedderlust FC (Group A), Den Amstel (Group B), Santos FC (Group C), Ann’s Grove (Group D) and Fruta Conquerors FC (Group C)
Group Phase Teams (Regional Member Associations), Group A: Rupununi FA’s Strikers FC, East Coast FA’s Buxton Stars, Group B: Georgetown FA’s Beacon FC, West Demerara FA’s Zeelugt Defenders FC, Group C: Georgetown FA’s Camptown FC, Group D: East Coast FA’s Mahaica Determinators and West Demerara FA’s Uitvlugt Warriors FC
The winners of the initial groups will proceed to the semi-finals in two predetermined matchups: Group A winner vs. Group C winner, and Group B winner vs. Group D winner.
Teams will compete for a substantial prize pot: Champions: G$2,000,000, Runners-up: G$1,000,000, Third Place: G$750,000, Fourth Place: G$500,000
Fixtures for the opening weekend are expected to be released on Thursday, December 4.
