Gov’t pursuing 15 acres to develop housing scheme at Cane Grove

The government is moving to acquire 15 acres of land at Cane Grove, Region Four, as it advances plans to regularise the community and develop a formal housing scheme for dozens of families who currently live without legal ownership.

This was confirmed by Minister of Housing, Collin Croal, during a community meeting with residents at the Virginia Primary School on Monday evening.

Croal reiterated the administration’s commitment to ensuring Cane Grove residents can secure their own house lots.

“We know where you are, and we will try to regularise a number of persons here in Cane Grove who do not have ownership of where they live,” Croal told residents gathered at the meeting.

The Central Housing and Planning Authority (CH&PA) has examined two potential areas for development.

However, one location has no available state land, while the other is under lease to a cattle farmers’ association. The ministry is now exploring negotiations to acquire approximately 15 acres of that leased land.

“One option is to engage the cattle farmer association, or the compensation, to acquire about 15 acres of land in the other area to develop a housing scheme,” the minister explained.

“This is something we will work on,” Croal added.

Croal said the ministry will collaborate with the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GLSC) and private lease owners to secure the acreage needed for the project.

He assured residents that government understands their desire for stability and legal tenure.

“You live here, we recognise that you want a better environment for yourselves. You want your children to come up in their own home, and we are here to help you,” Croal said.

About 55 residents have already registered for the regularisation process. Once the 15 acres are secured, the Housing Ministry will formally request the land so it can begin development of the new scheme.

“We will be making that request so that the area can be developed for housing,” Croal said.
