Police have launched an investigation after an intelligence-led operation unearthed a suspected RF-15 rifle and ammunition at 77 Miles, Unamco Road, the latest in a growing series of firearm finds reported across Guyana this week.
The discovery was made at about 11:30 hrs on Tuesday during routine patrols in the remote jungle corridor. Ranks searching the area found several makeshift camp sites scattered along the trail. Further checks led them to a hammock in one of the camps, where the rifle was hidden with a magazine containing thirty .223 live rounds.
No one was seen at the location and police believe the camp may have been abandoned shortly before the operation. The weapon and ammunition were transported to the Mackenzie Police Station, where they were lodged pending further investigation. No arrests have been made.
This latest find adds to a worrying pattern of firearm recoveries over the past several days. Police have been called to investigate high-powered weapons discovered in vehicles, hidden in homes, stashed in farmlands, and abandoned along roadways in Regions Three, Four, Five, Six and Ten. In several of those cases, ammunition, magazines, and components associated with rifles were also seized.
Senior police officers say the frequency of these discoveries underscores an ongoing push to disrupt illegal arms trafficking networks and recover unlicensed weapons circulating in communities and hinterland areas. Authorities are linking the finds to increased patrols, targeted intelligence work, and cooperation from residents who have been reporting suspicious activity.
As investigations continue into the Unamco discovery, police are appealing for information that could help identify the individuals responsible for stashing the rifle.
