History was made on Thursday afternoon at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Cricket Ground as Essequibo successfully navigated a dramatic run-chase to stun rivals Berbice and capture their first-ever Senior Women’s Inter-County 50-over title.
The victory capped a superb year for what has been affectionately dubbed the ‘Cinderella county’, following the men’s team’s first 50-over title just over a month ago.
In a match reduced to 45 overs per side due to rain, Berbice, who had been expected to win, were bowled out for 134 in 37.5 overs. Berbice were indebted to Tiea Isaacs, who anchored the innings with a top score of 47.
However, the innings was plagued by generosity from the opposition, with Essequibo conceding a whopping 45 runs in extras.
Essequibo’s bowling effort was spearheaded by the economical Plaffianna Millington, who claimed 3 for 19 across her nine overs, ably supported by Sherica Campbell (2-26).
Chasing 135, Essequibo made a nervous start, but the chase was steadied by the sisters, Laurene Williams (35) and Latoya Williams (32). The pair kept the middle order together with a match-defining stand of 62 for the sixth wicket.

The Berbice bowlers fought hard to defend the low total, creating constant pressure. Medium-pacer Nikesha Narine was particularly effective, leading the attack with 4 for 33.
Tremaine Marks and Kumarie Persaud each chipped in with two wickets apiece.
For Berbice, they leaked 33 in extras as Essequibo managed to cross the line, securing the victory with two wickets to spare in the 39th over.

The conclusion of the 50-over format now gives way to the T20 tournament, which is scheduled to commence on December 6, with all matches taking place at LBI.
These tournaments serve as the official selection platform for the national team ahead of the regional tournament in January 2026.
