Bent St ‘A’ delivered a dominant second-half performance to crush rivals Back Circle 4-1 and claim the VP ‘Champion of Champions’ Futsal Tournament title at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall on Wednesday evening.
In front of a large, vocal crowd, the hosts leveraged a blistering final 12 minutes, spearheaded by Bevney Marks, to secure the million-dollar top prize and the championship trophy.
The first half proved a tight, defensive affair typical of a showpiece final, with both teams struggling to break the deadlock.
Bent St ‘A’ eventually found the breakthrough in the 11th minute, courtesy of a deflection.
A flat cross into the area was unfortunately turned into his own net by a challenging Back Circle defender, giving Bent St ‘A’ a slender 1-0 lead going into the interval.
Back Circle emerged from the break with renewed urgency and immediately rewarded their supporters.
Just three minutes into the second half (23′), Ravin Naughton unleashed a powerful strike from the right flank that whistled into the lower left corner, levelling the contest at 1-1.
The equaliser, however, only served to re-ignite Bent St ‘A’.
They reclaimed the lead decisively in the 28th minute when Colin Nelson capitalised on a moment of defensive confusion.
An attempted pass into the box slipped through a defender’s legs, allowing Nelson to fire home and restore the advantage.
From that point, Bent St ‘A’ assumed control.
Bevney Marks then took centre stage, netting the crucial third goal in the 35th minute by expertly rolling the ball past the advancing goalkeeper into the lower corner.
Marks sealed the championship in the final minute, completing his brace by slamming the ball into the roof of the net to make the final score 4-1, confirming Bent St A’s status as the definitive Futsal champions.
Bent St ‘A’ walked away with the grand prize of $1,000,000, while runners-up Back Circle collected $500,000.
In the third-place playoff, Team Spirit defeated Bent St ‘B’ 3-2 to secure $300,000, leaving Bent St ‘B’ with the $200,000 fourth-place prize.
Earlier in the evening, the Under-17 final was settled on penalties, with Back Circle’s youth side overcoming Kingston 4-3 following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.
