Berbice man jailed for 15 years after raping child

D’Andre Perry, a resident of Stanleytown, New Amsterdam, Berbice, was sent to jail for 15 years after pleading guilty to a charge stemming from a horrific sexual crime against a nine-year-old girl.

During his trial that began in December 2025, Perry pleaded guilty to the charge in front of Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Berbice High Court.

The court learned that Perry was 27 years old when he committed the crime on October 19, 2024. On that fateful day, the young girl was simply on her way to visit her grandfather when Perry approached her and later sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene when the girl screamed for help.

The young girl, visibly shaken and disoriented, made her way to a relative’s home, where she recounted what happened. The girl was taken to the hospital, having suffered significant injuries and requiring surgery to address the harm caused during the incident.

The court was informed that as a direct result of what she had experienced, she had lost one liter of blood.

During the sentencing, Senior Social Services Officer Judith Fulton presented probation reports to the court, sharing that the offender grew up in an orphanage and previously worked with the Ministry of Social Protection.

Perry expressed his shame over his actions and offered his apologies to both the victim and her family. He mentioned that the victim’s mother had treated him like a son and requested the court’s forgiveness.

In his plea for a fair sentence, Attorney Kevin Morgan highlighted that Perry acknowledges his mistakes and recognises the need for personal reform from the beginning. Attorney Morgan urged the court to take into account that the incident was an isolated one and emphasised that Perry is a strong candidate for rehabilitation. He also requested that the court impose a sentence that focuses on deterrence and reform rather than a lengthy punishment based purely on preventative measures.

When delivering the sentence, Justice Kissoon underlined that individuals who take advantage of children, especially those in trusted roles, inflict enduring damage not just on the victims but also on their families and entire communities. The court recognised that the repercussions of these offenses go far beyond the immediate act, leaving emotional wounds that can endure for a lifetime. However, several factors were considered, and the sentence was handed down.
