‘Remarkably fit and dedicated!’ Former referee Inniss reflects on Skeete’s ‘excellence’

Former president of the Guyana Football Referees Council Dion Inniss has described Guyana’s FIFA Referee Maurees Skeete as someone who set “a standard of excellence”, was “remarkably fit and dedicated” and whose “professionalism and composure” earned the respect of stakeholders of the sport.

Skeete, following a brief period of illness, passed away on Friday, plunging the local football fraternity into mourning.

The Guyana Football Federation and Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle have also paid tribute to outstanding Guyanese sportswoman.

Below is a statement by Dion Inniss, detailing his personal interactions with Skeete

I had the privilege of officiating many matches alongside Maurees Skeete, with her in the middle.

She was a remarkably fit and dedicated referee, whose professionalism and composure on the field earned the respect of players, officials and fans alike.

Maurees represented Guyana with distinction within the Confederation, carrying our flag proudly and setting a standard for excellence.

Off the field, she was equally memorable- jovial, approachable and always easy to get along with.

Her laughter and warmth made every gathering lighter, and her spirit of camaraderie strengthened the bonds within our refereeing family.

In her personal journey, Maurees showed immense courage as she fought her illness with grace and resilience. Her strength was inspiring, and her legacy will remain a beacon for all who knew her.

On behalf of the worldwide refereeing community, I extend heartfelt condolences to her immediate family, friends and loved ones.

We mourn the loss of a colleague, a leader and a friend.

Dion Inniss,

Former FIFA Assistant Referee

Former President, Guyana Football Referees Council
