Two arrested after firearm, ammunition seized

Two men were arrested on Monday night after police discovered a firearm and ammunition in the vehicle they were travelling in.

The suspects are a 42-year-old taxi driver of East La Penitence, Georgetown, and a 23-year-old labourer from Tucville, Georgetown. A 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol along with a magazine containing 12 live rounds was found in the car.

The arrests were made during an intelligence-led operation at about 23:40 hrs along the Heroes Highway, in the vicinity of the Anteater Roundabout, Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Police ranks on mobile patrol intercepted a Toyota Axio motor car that was proceeding west along the roadway.

While engaging the occupants, ranks observed suspicious behaviour by one of the men, which prompted a search of the vehicle. The firearm and ammunition were subsequently discovered.
