Rifles, ammo missing as vessel carrying law enforcement officers sank

The police are investigating an incident which occurred on Saturday at about 08:10hrs at Karasabai Village, South Pakaraimas, involving ranks of the Guyana Police Force, the Guyana Defence Force and a Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) officer during a joint operation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the ranks were boarding an 18-foot aluminium boat at the landing at Normandy Crossing for a joint operation along the Rupununi River when the vessel sank shortly after departing the landing, forcing all occupants to swim safely to the riverbank.

A total of five (5) joint services ranks, including the coxswain and one GGMC officer were on board. No injuries were reported.

Police said during the incident, three service rifles and a quantity of ammunition were reported missing in the river.

Ranks of the Guyana Defence Force are currently conducting recovery efforts in the area as investigations continue
