Fisherman dies days after gas bottle explosion

A fisherman lost his life six days after a gas cylinder exploded while he was cooking aboard a vessel in Cayenne.

The young man, identified as Gangaram Iyarsammy, 25, hailed from 75 Free Yard, Port Mourant, Berbice. His mother, Koolcoomarie (only name given), told reporters that her son was in French Guiana for work. She recalled that he returned home last November for his sister’s wedding.

Koolcoomarie explained that Gangaram spent the Christmas holidays with her before returning to Cayenne on January 20, 2026, to sort out some paperwork. Upon his arrival, he went inside the fishing boat and ignited a gas stove, resulting in the gas bottle exploding.

She was told that her son jumped into the river to extinguish the flames but sustained burns to his face, chest, and feet as a result of the accident.

In urgent need of medical assistance, Gangaram was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Koolcoomarie revealed that since the incident, her son had been on oxygen support. She noted that on Saturday, the oxygen was removed when he showed signs of improvement and could breathe on his own.

Tragically, on Sunday, Gangaram suffered three heart attacks, the last occurring on Monday morning, which ultimately led to his passing.

The heartbroken mother expressed skepticism about the details surrounding the incident, however. Koolcoomarie is pleading with authorities in Cayenne to conduct a thorough investigation into her son’s death, as she struggles to come to terms with the loss.

Gangaram was remembered as a kind and loving individual.
