Police exchanged gunfire with heavily-armed men at Mara Mara Backdam

Investigators are probing a shooting incident that occurred on Monday in the Mara Mara Backdam, Cuyuni River, Region Seven, involving armed men and Police ranks on duty.

Police Headquarters reported that preliminary investigations revealed that four police ranks were conducting roving patrols in the area.

During the operation, Police said they parked their All-Terrain Vehicles (ATVs) at a strategic location and continued patrols on foot.

While retrieving the ATVs, Police Headquarters added that two ranks encountered three males dressed in camouflage and tactical clothing. They were each armed with high-powered rifles.

Upon being spotted, Police said the suspects opened fire on the police ranks.

As a result, one officer returned fire while both took cover, after which the suspects escape into the dense forest.

The remaining patrol team responded promptly to assist their colleagues.

According to Police Headquarters, one officer sustained minor injuries to his knee and rib area from a fall while taking cover. No other injuries were reported.

Investigations are ongoing as Police work to apprehend the armed suspects.
