Police constable injured after Canje accident

A Police constable has sustained serious injuries and is currently hospitalised following a collision with a car on Palmyra Public Road in East Canje, Berbice, on Tuesday morning.

Reports indicate that around 08:00 hrs, a motor vehicle (#PKK 1010), driven by 35-year-old Ashton Seegobin, was traveling west along the southern lane of Palmyra Public Road. As Seegobin turned onto Percy Smith Street, he was unexpectedly approached by a motorcycle, MR 1, operated by Stefon Chinapen, a Police constable who was wearing a safety helmet. While attempting to overtake Seegobin’s vehicle, Chinapen lost control, colliding with the rear side of Seegobin’s car.

The incident escalated when Chinapen’s motorcycle collided head-on with another vehicle, PAE 9749, driven by 20-year-old Yashmine Mannu; she was driving east in the opposite lane. The impact caused Mannu to lose control of her car, which then struck a utility pole situated on the northern grass parapet.

Following the collision, Chinapen fell onto the road and suffered injuries across his body. Public-spirited citizens rushed him to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Upon arrival, he was treated by the doctor on duty and is now a patient in stable but serious condition.

Mannu and her passenger were also assisted by public-spirited citizens and taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital. Both were treated and admitted for observation after being examined by the medical staff.

Breathalyser tests conducted on both drivers returned negative results.

The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
