U-16 Inter-County: Demerara defeat Essequibo; Berbice rout Select XI for 29

The Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Under-16 Inter-County tournament got underway on Monday with two encounters that could not have been more different in temperament.

While Demerara were forced to work hard for a 29-run victory over Essequibo at La Bonne Intention (LBI), Berbice needed just 26 deliveries to complete a crushing eight-wicket win over the GCB Select XI at Rose Hall Canje.

In a match defined by gritty middle-order contributions and a significant lack of discipline from the bowling side, Demerara managed to defend 167. Nathan Bishop led the way with a composed 41, supported by Lomar Seecharan (27) and Prosper Jacobus (22), as the hosts navigated through a disciplined spell from Essequibo’s DeMarcus Thomas (3-22) and Devraj Persaud (3-26).

Essequibo’s chase never quite found the necessary momentum, but Thomas showed his all-round quality with a top score of 33, and Jonathan Barry chipped in with 21, but a collective bowling effort from Demerara kept the pressure high.

Afraz Khan and Somesh Boyer claimed two wickets apiece as Essequibo were eventually bundled out for 139 in the 47th over.

Remarkably, both sides struggled with their control; Essequibo conceded 31 extras and Demerara had 30.

In a match decided by 29 runs, the 31 extras conceded by Essequibo effectively mirrored the margin of defeat.
