Rising stars showcase skills at Pepsi/Michael Parris U-16 Boxing

The country’s rising stars of amateur boxing delivered another exciting display at the recent hosting of the Guyana Boxing Association’s (GBA) Pepsi Michael Parris Under-16 Championship.

Held at the Andrew ‘Six Head’ Lewis Gym and sponsored by Pepsi, the event saw the New Amsterdam Boxing Gym claim the coveted Best Boxer award, courtesy of Jofes Jackson.

Jackson dominated the 73-76kg bout against Chaka Stephens, forcing the referee to stop the contest.

The opening bout set the tone for the evening as Jaden Fileen of the Vergenoegen Boxing Gym overwhelmed Jaden Lewis, prompting another referee stoppage.

In other action-packed bouts, Antonio Stephens succumbed to the power and precision of Stephen Haymer, while the 57kg clash between Randy Boodhoo and Zaheed Giddings was abandoned.

Curtis McDonald secured a hard-fought split decision victory over Lennox Lawrence, while the 46kg showdown between Josh Chester of the Andrew Lewis Gym and Jireh Mannie (RHJ) also ended in abandonment.

At the conclusion of the fiercely contested championship, the Andrew Lewis Gym and New Amsterdam Boxing Gym shared the title of Best Gym.

President of the GBA, Steve Ninvalle, expressed his satisfaction with the successful hosting of the tournament.

He emphasised the championship’s critical role in nurturing amateur boxing’s future in Guyana.

“This was the fourth edition of the event, and we aim to surpass last year’s record of hosting 16 tournaments. Our goal is to provide more opportunities for the country’s emerging talent,” Ninvalle stated.

Ninvalle said the Michael Parris Under-16 Championship continues to serve as a vital breeding ground for future champions while honouring Guyana’s lone Olympic medallist, Michael Parris.
