A 60-year-old motorcyclist lost his life on Sunday morning after he was involved in an accident on the Mocha Access Road, East Bank Demerara.
The dead man has been identified only as ‘Sookram’, a resident of Barr Street, Kitty, Georgetown.
Police said the accident occurred around 06:30 hrs. It involved motorcar PNN 5140, driven by 25-year-old Shawn Alleyne, and motorcycle CP 4540, which was being ridden by the victim.
According to a police report, initial enquiries revealed that Alleyne was proceeding east along the Mocha Access Road, allegedly at a fast rate when his car collided with the motorcyclist, who was traveling in the same direction.
The impact caused Sookram to fall onto the roadway, sustaining severe injuries. Police said Alleyne failed to stop after the collision and fled the scene.
Emergency Medical Technicians later found the victim unconscious and rushed him to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), where he succumbed to his injuries at about 09:50 hrs while receiving treatment.
The body was escorted to the GPHC mortuary, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
Following investigations, police said Alleyne was arrested and taken into custody at the Providence Police Station along with the vehicle involved.
Breathalyzer tests conducted on him showed blood alcohol content (BAC) readings of .058% and .054%, respectively. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
