A devastating head-on collision between two motor lorries claimed the lives of three people on Tuesday afternoon along the Loo Creek Public Road on the Soesdyke-Linden Highway.
Two of the victims have been identified so far. They are Lional Campbell, 73, of Kuru Kururu Village, Soesdyke-Linden Highway, and Venezuelan nation, Meli, only name given).
The accident occurred around 12:30 hrs and left one vehicle engulfed in flames.
The crash involved motor lorry, GAG 313, owned by Mohamed Construction Inc. and driven by 29-year-old Venezuelan national Carlos Yasmanie, and motor lorry, GXX 1546, owned by Tristan Grimmond and driven by Campbell.
The Guyana Police Force, in a statement, said the lorry GAG 313 was traveling north at a high speed when the driver reportedly swerved to avoid a slowing car ahead.
In doing so, he reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided head-on with the southbound lorry.
Following the impact, lorry GAG 313 caught fire with “Meli” who was trapped inside. She was burnt to death before rescue efforts could reach her.
The unidentified victim was a passenger of the lorry driven by Campbell.
Emergency Medical Technicians arrived swiftly at the scene where the victims were pronounced dead. Police said the bodies were transported to the Pensioners Mortuary in Linden, awaiting post-mortem examinations; however, when the News Room visited the scene at about 19:00 hrs at least one body was still on the roadside.
Meanwhile, it was reported too that Yasmanie, the only survivor, was pulled from the burning truck by bystanders.
He sustained a broken left leg and multiple lacerations and was transported to Georgetown Public Hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
The investigation is ongoing.
