Suspect arrested in Berbice burglary, arson

Police ranks are investigating a burglary and arson committed at the home of Helen Helen Kashi, a 54-year-old self-employed woman of No. 19 Village (Reserve), Corentyne, Berbice.

Police Headquarters said the incident occurred at around 19:00 hrs on September 2.

Kashi stated that while she was at her mother’s residence, located some distance away, she was approached by Rameshwar Ramdat called Kevin, who was in the company of others dressed in a political party’s colour and engaging in celebratory activities.

“During this encounter, the man allegedly abused her for supporting the We Invest in Guyana (WIN) political party and threatened to burn her home,” the police report noted.

As a result of this threat, Kashi spent the night at her mother’s residence. At about 07:00 hours on Wednesday, upon returning home, she discovered her premises had been ransacked, with belongings thrown outside.

She further observed that one gold chain valued at $22,000 and cash amounting to $23,000 were missing. Additionally, a makeshift table attached to the eastern wall of her residence had been scorched.

Police took a statement, and the 28-year-old suspect was arrested; he is presently in custody assisting the police with their investigations. On completion, an investigative file will be compiled and sent to the DPP for legal advice.
