One Guyana Commission to strengthen national development – Pres. Ali

President Dr. Irfaan Ali on Sunday said he will operationalise the One Guyana Commission to strengthen development in Guyana as part of efforts to empower citizens regardless of political affiliation, race, religion, or gender.

He made the announcement during his inauguration speech to thousands of people who gathered on the lawns of State House to witness his swearing-in ceremony.

“I will operationalise the One Guyana commission with particular emphasis on public input structure, cultural development and national integration, our procurement system will be modernised and strengthened with a shared system to promote wider participation and ensure accountability and transparency,” President Ali said.

The One Guyana Commission seeks to give voice and recognition to all social groups in society, regardless of political affiliation, race, religion, or gender.

The Head of State said the national success of Guyanese will be made possible with the creation of opportunities for all to benefit from. He said the oil and gas sector has great benefits, but the country is not solely reliant on one sector.

“We’re building a diversified economy that will generate jobs, raise income and secure prosperity, as part of our commitment to economic diversification, to strengthen the traditional pillars of our economy, mining, agriculture, fisheries and forestry, ensuring that these sectors continue to provide jobs, wealth and stability for our people,” Dr. Ali said.

According to President Ali, the administration is currently working to build out a world-class tourism sector that will create new economic ventures.

Competitive manufacturing opportunities and the input of digital technology will also support people, enabling them to generate wealth and create a lasting national unity, the President said.

“Guyana’s economic future depends not only on the ambitions and policies of government, but also on the private sector.

“The private sector must be ready to drive wealth and job creation. Success is formed when businesses pursue growth while ensuring fairness to their workers, upholding social responsibility and contributing to the broader wellbeing of our society,” President Ali said.
