Eleven-year-old Kimberly Singh died on Sunday after the canter she was travelling in crashed into a trench at Enmore New Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara.
Police confirmed that the accident occurred at around 12:00 hrs on the Enmore access road, ECD.
The canter, GAH 1139, was being driven by Singh’s father, 40-year-old Rupnarine Singh of Hope West, Enmore. Also in the vehicle at the time were her mother, 32-year-old Kamini Jairam, and her siblings aged three, four, and eight.
According to police reports, the vehicle had earlier been parked at Lot 248, Hope West, at the home of 29-year-old Rieaad Naraine. Rupnarine reportedly met Naraine around 09:00 hrs to borrow the vehicle for a family drive.
Naraine said he advised Singh to seek permission from the owner, Takechand Rooplall of Clonbrook, but Singh allegedly took the vehicle without formal approval while it was left parked with the keys inside.
Investigators said Rupnarine was driving south along the access road at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle, which ended up in a nearby trench.
All occupants sustained injuries and were rushed to the Enmore Regional Hospital by public-spirited citizens. However, Kimberly was pronounced dead on arrival.
Her body has since been transferred to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where a post-mortem examination is awaited.
Investigations are ongoing.
