Indar outlines ambitious agenda as first Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation

Deodat Indar has stepped into a newly created role with a wide-reaching mandate, serving as Guyana’s first Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation.

Sworn in on Saturday before President Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, Indar will oversee a portfolio that touches every Guyanese household while also shaping the nation’s growing status as a regional aviation hub.

The ministry brings together essential services—water, electricity, maritime, and aviation—under one umbrella, with support responsibilities for the energy sector through the Office of the Prime Minister.

It is an elevation for Indar, who previously served as Minister within the Ministry of Public Works from 2020 to 2025.

Speaking to the News Room, Indar was clear about his priorities: reliable service delivery and better quality.

“Two major areas where service delivery comes in are access to water and electricity and the quality of those services. It’s necessary when you put on a light, you want it to come on. When you turn on a tap, you want water to come on,” he said.

On aviation, Indar said government’s ambitions are no less bold. “The President has made it clear he wants Guyana to be an aviation hub. We are building a second terminal at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport and modernising several hinterland airstrips to accommodate growing travel demand,” he explained, pointing out that over one million passengers entered Guyana last year.

The Minister believes that consolidating utilities, aviation and maritime services will not only improve oversight but also deliver more cost-effective and citizen-focused outcomes.

“These sectors have been here since we became a republic, and we have reached a point where we need to ensure reliable supply and better quality,” he noted.

Indar’s immediate agenda includes improving the quality and reliability of water and electricity supply, reducing costs for utilities, modernising airports and hinterland airstrips, and strengthening maritime operations.

With these priorities, Indar is positioning his ministry at the centre of Guyana’s development drive—making everyday services more dependable while pushing forward the country’s ambition to become a major player in global aviation.
